Solo PR: Entrepreneurship Panel

Do you have an entrepreneurial spirit or aspire to start your own business one day? Learn what it takes to work as solo practitioner and work for yourself. These panelists are not only smart communicators but they are smart in business and personal branding. They will share some of their personal experiences and the secrets behind working solo. Have your questions answered on everything from freelancing to how to stay sane working from home.

Panelist Bios:

Heather Whaling

Heather fuses strategic thinking, strong writing skills and creativity to deliver public relations, social media and marketing results. She launched Geben Communication to work more closely with nonprofit organizations and small businesses. Heather is a contributor to the PR Breakfast Club and co-moderator of #pr20chat, a weekly exploration of social media’s influence on public relations.  She’s a fan of social good, sports, politics, news, pop culture and her iPhone.

M.J. Clark

M.J. has worked in the communication field for more than 20 years. She has a master’s degree in organizational communication from The Ohio State University and a bachelor’s degree in public relations from Ohio University.  She was a visiting professor of public relations at Ohio University’s Scripps School of Journalism in 2006 and 2007, and she has won national and local awards for teaching and mentoring students.  M.J. owns a communication consulting business, M.J. Clark Communications, which focuses on public relations, marketing and advertising. In addition, she is a leadership consultant for Integrated Leadership Systems, a leadership and team building training company in Columbus. M.J. was the 2005 President of the Central Ohio Public Relations Society of America and is Accredited in Public Relations. Rocky VanBrimmer

Rocky is a Christian, family man, Ohio ambassador, Central Ohio evangelist, social media strategist, event planner, speaker, world changer, starving comedian, and bacon lover (mostly in that order). Rocky is known through out the United States and Central Ohio for his expertise in building online communities around business, services, brands, non-profits and promoting sell out events. Rocky is the founder and Sr. Partner at Start Engaging Others which specializes in social media training, strategy, and management. Rocky and his wife Amanda live in Delaware, Ohio with their 7 year old son, and dog.

Jennifer Brown

As the founder of JP Squared, Jennifer led the business to profitability within 45-days and built the client roster with the largest retail and consumer automotive glass company in the U.S.; an international e-learning pioneer organization; an all-natural soap manufacturer; a Central Ohio leading start-up for local living; among others. Jennifer’s previous experience includes roles at Limited Brands, parent company of Bath & Body Works and Victoria’s Secret. She has a dual bachelor’s degree in communications and public relations from Eastern Michigan University and she is a member of the Eastern Michigan University PR Alumni Board.
